"In 2005 I put my paintbrushes and paints away and started to explore the world of 'collage.' Friends in our art group in Fearrington who were experienced in this form of artistic expression encouraged and instructed me. I also studied a fine grade book by a successful collagist.
'Learning by doing' is the motto. Of course all the rules of composition, color, etc. apply.
The tissue paper was my choice of media. An endless array of colors is available. However, tissue paper has qualities that have to be understood in order to be used efficiently. I'm still learning how to manage those "qualities" as I work on each composition. Tissue paper dries in different ways when diluted glue is applied. It can be tricky. The dried surface of each piece of tissue can have a texture of bumps, lines, and wiggles, etc. Close-up, these qualities can interfere with the overall feeling of the composition. Stepping back helps the eye to focus on the real subject.
I have enjoyed the challenges, I won three 1st place awards in North Carolina. I have sold some compositions. I have no place here to exhibit so I just enjoy working on what interests me. I hope you enjoy these pieces."
